Hair dye colors - What does your hair color say about you

Hair colors certainly create initial impressions, and hair dye colors can change that impression.


Brown

Brunettes are undoubtedly perceived as the responsible type. Brown itself is not a staid color, it is the even tone which tends to run with it.

To make brown hair far more interesting you should have lowlights, as they add a whole new dimension to the impression created.


Blond

Blonde hair immediately attracts the human eye, as it is drawn to lighter shades, and is associated with the sexy look. However blondes can also find it more difficult to be taken seriously.

Blonde hair can require higher maintenance than other colors.


Red

Red is the most popular hair dye color and accounts for only about 4% of the population are naturally red heads. The perception is one of being strong, opinionated and sexy. Conversley with pale lashes, freckles and an orange tinge, the perception becomes one of a homely person.

Red is the hardest color for the hair to absorb and can quickly fade giving a washed out look, it is also a good idea to apply highlights or lowlights to the hair to emphasise the color, which can look very flat.


Black

Tough, mysterious and exotic are common initial impressions.

Highlights in a strong color, or a blue black prevent the dullness which can appear in black hair color. It is also very useful to apply a shiner to the hair.

I thought it may be good to look at the process of hair dye colors and how it works.

75% of American women color their hair, with red as the most requested color.

Men's home hair color sales have increased by 50% over the past 5 years.

Most hair dye colors can be applied easily. Depending on the product, this may be to wet or dry hair or applied like a shampoo followed by rinsing and conditioning.

There are three main types of hair coloring.

Semi Permanent color is generally used for adding color to hair, rather than changing the color of the hair. The dye contains color molecules, which enter the hair outer layer and cortex. They do not react with the natural pigments and generally wash out of the hair after 6 to 12 shampoos and the hair is the same color as it was prior to application.

Demi-Permanent color Molecules penetrate the cuticle and cortex then react with other color molecules, creating a larger molecule which takes longer to wash out, about 24 - 26 shampoos. The product does not contain ammonia, so the hair cannot be lightened, but generally does contain peroxide, which enhances color.


Permanent color is the coloring process, which will afford the greatest change in hair color. These dyes use both ammonia and peroxide. Molecules enter the cortex and react with the hair and cannot be washed out, hair has to grow out. The product lightens the hair, forming a new color base, then the color dye reacts with the new base, to create the desired color. Because the hair's natural pigment is lightened, it means the final effect will be a combination of your natural pigment and the new color, it means the final color will vary slightly between one person and another. Roots do grow back and touch up is generally required every 4 to 6 weeks. Hair can be lightened or darkened. Lightening hair always requires a bleaching process, which is strips color out of the hair.

There is a fourth group of hair dyes, which are the bright unnatural colors, (which I use in my own hair). These vary in strength and generally require the bleaching of hair prior to application, to achieve the desired effect, a far more aggressive color stripping process, than from the three mainstream groups.

Hair dye colors - graying hair

When looking at hair dye colors, often it is a question of covering roots and not really wanting to do much more.

Many women who turn gray don't do anything radical, prefering products a shade or two different than their natural color, designed to color only the gray. The result is a natural two-tone effect in which the gray appears to simply be a lighter shade of the natural hair color. Others decide that this is a good opportunity to find out what they'd look like with a completely different hair color and go from brown to blond, red or black. For more ideas see here

Gray hair is in fact one of the most color resistant types of hair. One of the reasons gray hair is so challenging is it is a different texture than normal hair. Gray hair usually grows in coarser than normal hair because it lacks pigment.

The key to coloring gray hair is softening hair, this will help open the hair cuticle so color is more easily accepted on the hair shaft. One way to do this is by applying a 20% solution of peroxide to gray hair. You can leave the solution on for up to ten minutes. Once this step is complete, normally you can apply any color you like. Gray hair does require a little more care than other hair types. For one, it can easily turn yellow if exposed to too many free radicals and pollutants from the environment. Fortunately there are a number of shampoos and other hair products you can buy to help minimize any yellowing that may occur. Gray hair also needs lots of moisturizing and conditions. In general you’ll want to stay away from products with lots of alcohol, which can dry hair and make it seem brittle.

When you find a hair color that you like, look at the swatches on the back of the boxes or read the instructions to see what results you can expect for your original hair color. Remember that all hair color results are determined by a user's own natural color.

Hair dye colors - Breast Cancer awareness

I regulalry change my hair dye colors, but for this month have used pink as support for the breast cancer awareness.

The number of people who have recognized the link between my hair color and breast cancer awareness, is great, as it usually is. But I do think this year there seems to have been a greater awareness than usual, so all credit to those involved.

Hair dye Colors - Manic Panic

I really need to get some new hair dye colors.

I have had various combinations of light blue and pink in my hair during the summer and I think it is time for a change. I think heading into autumn winter, it would be good to look at purple and red, something stronger and more in keeping with the season., so I need to have a look at some alternatives.

Crazycolors, do a great Red and aubergine and I am a great fan of crazy colors, which have been my main color supplier since the '70s, when I first started dying my hair as a London Punk Rocker. Can't believe that is 30 years ago. That said, aubergine isn't what I am thinking of this time round.

Special Effects also do some great colors and are a good brand for longer lasting colors, but I don't want to go with them this time.

Hair dye colors for breast cancer

Cleveland family chooses pink hair dye colors for cancer.

Holly Hockenberry and two of her children have dyed their hair pink, to help raise cancer relief funds.

Holly took part in the 60 mile, three day Cleveland Breast Cancer walk on August 17th.

Holly's grandmother lost her battle to cancer in 1982 and her mother is in remission after being diagnosed 13 years ago. Holly herself has had 3 benign lumps removed.


Since registering in February, the Euclid resident has raised $2 900 and she is still looking to raise more.

As a legal secretary, Holly checked with her employers and found them more than willing supporters of her fundraising idea. Her children were certainly the talk of High School. The Salon who were responsible for the hair dye colors transformation, are also trying to raise funds, by selling cookbooks filled with clients' recipes for the cause in October.

The walk which started at Thistledown race track and ended on Lakeside Avenue in Cleveland, benefits breast cancer research via Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.

Can bleach be used as one of the hair dye colors

There are mixed views on this one, technically hair bleach is not a hair dye color, but a color strip.

It is harder to bleach red hair than dark hair and dark hair should be bleached in stages to avoid damaging the hair as much as possible. Dark hair goes through stages with repeated bleaching. Black hair initially becomes red, then orange followed by yellow and finally white.

Bleached hair has a yellow tinge to it because of the natural structure of hair, which is mainly a-keratin which is naturally a pale yellow.

The more frequently bleach is applied, the drier hair becomes, moisturising hair after bleaching is a must.

That is the technical bit. It depends a lot on the effect you are looking for in your hair, whether a color tint would be better, or leaving your hair stripped provides the effect you are after.

I personally never use a tint, when I am leaving white in my hair, but that is likely to do with the fact that I wear it against a vivid color. My partner on the other hand, likes a multi-toned blond 'natural' look and doesn't have her hair bleached before adding color, rather goes for a tint to the color.

So in short, whether you bleach your hair as a 'color' and leave it, or do as the majority would advise, tint your hair to a finish, is very much a personal choice. For a 'natural' look, then a tint is far more effective.

Hair dye colors - Is organic any good?

Are organic hair dye colors effective? I have been considering this over the past few days and have done some more research on the subject.

Hair dye colors can contain a range of ingredients which may cause allergies in individuals and the debate at to their carcinogenic effect, rages back and forth.

The fact is, that hair dyes, in the main, do contain synthetic chemicals. That said, dyeing hair is an age old custom which shows no signs of lapsing in popularity, be it for vibrancy, change of mood, or a myriad of other reasons, the fact is, many of us put hair dye colors in our hair.

For those who are nervous of the synthetic products, all is not lost and I would expect the market for organic hair dyes will continue to grow, so the choices will extend.

Hair dye colors - What should I consider?

Today, about half of all American women use hair dye colors and men are increasingly dyeing their hair.

Due to high salon prices, more and more people are dyeing their own hair. The best weapon against mistakes for the home hair colorist, is planning.

First off, ensure you don't need to go to a professional stylist, some people do and should.

While Hair dye colors are becoming ever easier to use at home, you would be best to get advice if:

Your hair is severely damaged - It breaks easily

You want to lighten your hair more than three shades

You want to darken your hair by more than three shades

You are trying to fix your earlier mistake

How radical do you want to be.

The effect of hair dye colors can be graded in levels of the effect of the dye, regardless of color.

In order:

Highlighting, Highlights are usually permanent, and they are a great way to add texture and subtle color to your hair-whether they're red or blond or even blue-without dramatic changes. Can take a while to apply the hair dye colors

Semi permanent, semi-permanent products coat the hair with color that washes out after about 6 to 12 shampoos. You can only go darker effectively with semi permanent hair dye colors

Demi-Permanent, Demi-permanent hair dye colors last longer approximately 24 to 26 shampoos, but again can't be used for lightening hair.

Permanent, Permanent hair dye colors use both ammonia and peroxide, which enter the hair's cortex and create a change that cannot be washed out. Keep in mind that the end result is always a combination of the added pigment and the original pigment of your hair

Hair dye colors

Shades are basically broken down into two categories: warm and cool. People with warm eye, hair, and skin tones should choose a warm hair color, and people with cool tones should choose a cool hair color. Any beautician at a makeup counter in a department store would be happy to help you figure out if you're a "cool" or a "warm"

"Cool" people should stay away from hair dye colors with reddish or golden hues and seek out the cooler colors, ranging from platinum to blue-black. "Warm" people should choose hair dye colors with golden and red highlights, from strawberry blonde to dark auburn. Remember, unless you're prepared for disastrous results, stay within a few shades of your natural color.

There are simply too many brands on the market to go over the pros and cons of each, but professional stylists suggest that you use a popular brand name.

1. Popular brands are usually popular for a reason. If L'oreal's hair products were known to turn hair green, you'd hear about it. But if you use the obscure "Bombshell in a Bottle," you might turn into more of a bomb than a bombshell.
   
   
2. Popular brands usually have a help line that's listed right on the box. Although you're most likely not going to get hair experts when you call, you'll get answers to common problems you may encounter during the actual dyeing of your hair.

You are now ready to go to step Five, applying hair dye colors

There are two very important tests that you must perform with each and every hair coloring product you use: the allergy test and the strand test.

The allergy test will make sure that you don't get a rash all over your scalp after you apply your hair dye colors. dye your hair. Perform the allergy test at least two days before you dye your hair. If nothing terrible happens, you're good to go.

The strand test is exactly what it sounds like, and you can do it either while performing the allergy test or you can do it the day you dye your hair. With the teaspoon of dye (and a gloved hand), choose a hair strand, and completely saturate it with the dye. Leave it in for the amount of time you'll leave the dye on the rest of your head later, and then wash hair. Check out the strand.

Before you get started with your whole head, make sure you get everything together that you need before you apply your hair dye colors. You'll need:

1. Rubber gloves.
   
2. A comb.
   
3. Old clothes.
   
4. An old towel
   
5. A large plastic bag and hair clip.
   
6. A timer.

READ THE DIRECTIONS ON THE BOX AT LEAST TWICE BEFORE YOU BEGIN. Different products have very different instructions. For example, some require your hair to be dry, and others wet.

You will probably need to mix some bottles together (or shake up one bottle) follow the instructions exactly as they are written.

Put the plastic bag over your hair. Twist the bag tightly, and secure it with a hair clip. The heat will help the chemicals react better.

Relax
When the timer rings, and follow the directions in the box.

Never try to dye your eyebrows or eyelashes. The FDA prohibits salons from doing it, as it can cause inflammations around the eyes, and even blindness, so certainly don't try it on your own.

Blond hair dye colors, much favoured by European and North American women.

Blond (or blonde, is a hair color found in certain people characterized by low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin. From degrees of almost light brown, to pale, almost white yellow, the various hues of blondness are found in a little less than 1.8% of the world's human population.

The resultant visible hue depends on various factors, but always has some sort of yellowish color, going from the very pale blond caused by a patchy, scarce distribution of pigment, to reddish "strawberry" blond colors or golden brownish blond colors, the latter with more eumelanin. True blonds have the thinnest strands of hair while the strands of tropical black hair are the thickest.

Blond hair dye colors come in many hues, sub-categories of blond hair have also been invented to describe someone with blond hair more accurately. Examples include the following:

Hair dye colors - Red

Red Hair dye colors are an extremely popular choice, with the rich and vibrant colors, which can be toned down, or highlighted, depending on the effect being sought, not for the faint hearted.

Less than 1% of the human population has red hair. It occurs mainly in western European populations, and their descendants, and at low frequencies throughout other parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. Cultural reactions have varied from ridicule to admiration; many common stereotypes exist regarding redheads, and they are often portrayed as the “fiery-tempered redhead”.

Hair Dye Colors - Should I go organic?

I was reading an interesting article about hair dye colors in hair scientist and thought I would relay it here.

The first recorded references to hair dye colors relate to Henna obtained from the Egyptian privet.

Simple Hair dyes have historically been manufactured by the infusion of natural vegetation.

Other categories possess increasingly complex chemicals.

Modern Hair dyes can produce wonderful results, but some involve sophisticated chemicals which are capable of inducing hair damage.

Hair dyes may be classified as:

Vegetable hair dye colors: If pure are extracted from plants. Most vegetable dyes will wash out of the hair. Henna however is a 'permanent hair dye color', which may change the feel and lustre of hair.

Pure Vegetable hair dye colors are basically harmless and do not require allergy tests. It is unlikely that any adverse skin reaction or hairshaft damage would result from their use. Egyptian (Vegetable) Henna however can, in some people, make the hairshafts seem dry and lustreless. This is not injurious. This form of henna is used in some shampoos e.g. to provide auburn highlights.
Camomile is another of the vegetable hair dye colors, it coats the hairshaft adding a yellowish hue.

Some 'vegetable' hair dye colors may contain permanent oxidation dye ingredients, as an example, Tunisian Henna where available is not a vegetable dye as it contains metallic salts and is classed as an inorganic dye.

Inorganic hair dye colors: include hair color restorers, sulphide and reduction dyes based on metallic salts. These dyes produce permanent colour changes.

Synthetic organic hair dye colors are based on coal tar products. they include:

1) Temporary hair dye colors These dyes will wash out of hair.

2) Semi-permanent hair dye colors These dyes produce red yellow and blue colourings. These dyes wash out of hair after 6-8 shampoos.

3) Permanent oxidation hair dye colors They require an oxidising agent e.g. hydrogen peroxide to function.

Colours may fade with strong sunlight.
The process may change the feel of hair.

4) Quasi-permanent hair dye colors are a mixture of semi-permanent and permanent oxidation dyes. The semi-permanent ingredient will wash out.
